The FHM is a private, non-profit, and state-approved University of Applied Sciences. Founded in 2000 by medium-sized enterprises and educational institutions, it has since developed into one of the most successful private universities in Germany, with a strong focus on the needs of SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises). The FHM’s concept emphasizes practical career orientation, individual tutoring, and small group sizes.

Currently, there are approximately 5775 students enrolled in BA, MA, and MBA programs, with 50 in doctoral programs and 630 in scientific further education. The programs offered include 39 BA study programs, 18 MA programs, a doctoral program in cooperation with the University of Worcester in the UK, and 9 programs in the field of scientific further education. These study programs cover three main areas: Economics, Media & Communication, and HR, Health, and Social Work. The FHM employs 92 professors and collaborates with about 240 experts from the business sector as guest lecturers.

In addition to the central FHM campus located in Bielefeld, the FHM maintains 8 further locations. Distance learning takes place via the FHM Online Campus, supported by the LMS Moodle. The Online University features dynamic learning content enriched with learning videos, virtual collaboration among students, and virtual student-teacher communication. Various educational provisions for supporting lifelong learning are coordinated and managed by the FHM Institute of Continuing Education and Competence Development, which caters to the needs of target groups with different professional, educational, and social backgrounds.

Furthermore, the FHM operates the Center for Sustainable Governance (CSG), which works closely with the Federal Ministry of North Rhine-Westphalia. The mission of the CSG is to develop ecological, social, and economic criteria for industries and companies, monitor their compliance, and promote sustainable development.
